Contabo is a budget-focused VPS and dedicated server hosting provider, known for offering significantly more RAM and storage per dollar than mainstream cloud providers — the tradeoff is fewer managed services and a smaller feature ecosystem than AWS, Azure, or DigitalOcean.
Who it is actually for
Best fit: developers and agencies running self-managed workloads — a personal project, a client site, a small production app — where raw compute/storage cost per dollar matters more than managed database services, advanced networking, or a polished console.
The catch
Support and documentation are noticeably thinner than DigitalOcean or the major clouds, and you are expected to manage the server yourself (OS updates, security patching, backups) — there is no equivalent to DigitalOcean's managed database or App Platform layer.
Closest alternatives
DigitalOcean for a more polished experience and managed services at a higher price point, or Hetzner as another budget-focused European VPS provider with a similar value proposition to Contabo.
