Both are real, mature ecommerce platforms, but with opposite trade-offs. Shopify is fully hosted — Shopify handles servers, security, and PCI compliance, in exchange for platform fees and working within its rules. WooCommerce is a self-hosted WordPress plugin — you own the infrastructure and pay no platform transaction fee, but you're responsible for hosting, security patching, and performance yourself (or via your host). For a merchant who wants a store live fast with zero server management, Shopify's hosted model removes that burden entirely. For a developer or agency comfortable managing WordPress hosting who wants full infrastructure control and no per-transaction platform fee, WooCommerce is the more direct fit.
Verdict
The real question is who manages the server — if the answer is "not us," Shopify's hosted model earns its fees. If the answer is "we already do this," WooCommerce's self-hosted control and lack of transaction fees wins.
