Temporal

Temporal is an open-source durable execution platform for orchestrating long-running, failure-resistant workflows in code. Rather than writing state machines and retry logic by hand, developers write plain functions in Go, Java, Python, TypeScript, or .NET, and Temporal guarantees the workflow resumes exactly where it left off after crashes, deploys, or infrastructure failures.

It is commonly used for payment processing pipelines, order fulfillment, CI/CD orchestration, and any process that spans minutes to months and cannot be allowed to silently fail. The self-hosted server is fully open source; Temporal Cloud offers a managed version billed on actions and storage.

Teams choosing Temporal are usually replacing a patchwork of cron jobs, queues, and manual retry code with a single durable-execution primitive, at the cost of a real learning curve around workflow-versus-activity code separation.
