Shopify is a fully-hosted ecommerce platform for building, hosting, and scaling online stores, with a large app/theme ecosystem and full deployment handled by Shopify itself — servers, security, and PCI compliance are all managed for you.

Who it is actually for

Best fit: agencies and merchants who want to launch a working, secure store quickly without managing infrastructure, and who are comfortable with Shopify's platform fees and somewhat closed ecosystem in exchange for that convenience.

The catch

Less control than a self-hosted option like WooCommerce — you are working within Shopify's platform constraints, and transaction fees apply unless using Shopify Payments. Highly custom functionality sometimes requires paid apps rather than free code-level changes.

Closest alternatives

WooCommerce for full control via self-hosted WordPress, or BigCommerce as another hosted-platform competitor with stronger native B2B features.
